1 · Position
A seafront casino and hotel at Carrasco, east of central Montevideo, inaugurated on 29 January 1921 as the anchor of a resort suburb — begun in 1912 and stopped for nine years by the war, by Gastón Mallet and Jacques Dunant, in a quarter laid out by Charles Thays and Édouard André. It closed in 1997 and reopened on 7 March 2013 under Sofitel.
2 · Why it is in the Library
It belongs with Baden-Baden as an instance of the same model outside Europe: the casino built to create a district rather than to serve one.
3 · ⚑ Candour
This entry is thin — the opening date, the architect, the closure and restoration, and the current operator were not established here. It should be completed before it is cited.
